Rudolf Ludwig Karl Virchow (13 October 1821, Schivelbein, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia – 5 September 1902, Berlin) was a German doctor and renowned pathologist. He worked at the Charité in Berlin. He was also active as a liberal politician. He was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives and the German Reichstag. He campaigned for better hygiene, clean water and public health. He is famous for his saying: ‘omnis cellula e cellula' (every cell arises from a cell) . His major achievements include research into leukaemia and the development of thrombosis.
