On June 26, 2018, the Fushun West Open-Pit Coal Mine in Liaoning Province was bustling with activity. The mine is located in the western Fushun Coalfield, on the northern foothills of Qiantai Mountain on the south bank of the Hun River. The mine boasts a long and extensive history. Operations began in 1901, and it switched to open-pit mining in 1913. The pit is 6.6 kilometers long, 2.2 kilometers wide, and mined to a depth of 400 meters. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Fushun West Open-Pit Coal Mine has undergone seven major technological upgrades. It now employs a "zoned mining, combined transportation, and internal dumping" production process, implementing horizontal stratified mining. 3, 4, 8, and 10 m³ electric shovels are used for mining and loading, while 85- and 150-ton DC standard-gauge electric locomotives and 32-, 42-, and 108-ton mining trucks are used for transportation. The mine's main products are coal and oil shale. The coal is long-flame and gas coal, with an average calorific value of 7,500-8,000 kcal/kg, while the oil shale has an oil content of 6-14%. There are also two special products, namely jet and amber, both of which are rare minerals. Jet can be used to carve various handicrafts, and amber can be used to make necklaces and other ornaments. <br>The West Open-pit Mine has made great contributions to the development of the Republic.
