The Caen Hill flight has 29 locks stretching over two miles, raising the canal by 237 feet over two miles. The 16 locks that take boaters up the steepest part of the flight are a scheduled ancient monument. It takes around four hours to boat through the Caen Hill flight. Canal & River Trust volunteer lock keepers are on hand to help. Caen Hill Locks were designed and built by the famous canal engineer John Rennie the Elder. He designed them as a solution to the steep hill in Devizes, Wiltshire, allowing the Kennet & Avon Canal to navigate the challenging terrain.
